Mateo´s Peak

Located at 5150 meters above sea level, “El Mateo” is one of the peaks of the “Cortahierbas Mountain” in the Cordillera Blanca. It is located in the Ulta valley next to the Punta Olímpica Pass, near the tunnel of the same name (4768 meters above sea level) from which it can be observed.

El Mateo is one of the most accessible peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, since it can be reached by car to the base of the mountain. However, climbing does offer a challenge for those who love adventure, since it requires some previous experience. With moderate slopes of rock, snow and / or ice (45 °), some sections can be a bit more complex than others, so you should always be accompanied by a specialized guide. From the summit you can see mountains such as Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Ulta, Chacraraju and Contrahierbas, the descent is by the same route.
