Devil´s Rock
After a 15-minute walk from Montaña Jazz, you can find the mysterious “Piedra del Diablo (Devil’s Stone)”.
It is a giant rock cut in half and settled in that place for many years. In the concave part of it you can see the carved figure of a devil. At first glance it is not easy to distinguish, but when you pour water or squeeze it with herb leaves it becomes visible.
Legend says that in the past, in this area, there was a huge lake from which the devil himself could be seen coming out on full moon nights.
The villagers, frightened by the bad omen, sought the help of a priest. Both, the priest and the devil, fought a fierce battle. So great was the display of power that it produced a flood that overflowed the lagoon and buried the priest and the devil in a rock, which later split in two, leaving the demon’s side in Carhuaz and the priest’s side in Yanamarca.
